SANFL Mini Draft

Post by BlackPanther on Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:33 pm

Well who do we take?

Sam Siggins - 194cm, 82kg Defender from Lauderdale, Tasmania

Rory Atkins - 185cm, 81kg Forward from Calder Cannons

Oliver Wines - 187cm, 89kg Midfielder from Bendigo Pioneers

Tom Clury - 192cm, 83kg Defender from Murray Bushrangers

Mason Shaw - 198cm, 86kg Forward from East Fremantle

I reckon Mason Shaw the big Ruck/Fwd

I would go for Siggins. A big defender would be of great help

The one that is less likely to play AFL.

1. Shaw replace Ainger/McKernan
2. Siggins or Clury, need a tall defender

Draft # 7. OLIVER WINES (PORT ADELAIDE , Bendigo Pioneers, 18, 185cm, 83kg)
Strong inside midfielder with a hard edge at the ball, especially at stoppages. Ferocious tackler who wins plenty of the ball and runs all day.
Draft #29. TOM CLUREY (PORT ADELAIDE , Murray Bushrangers, 18, 193cm, 85kg)
Powerful key defender who reads the play well and is adept at blanketing opponents, while generating drive. Potential leader.
Draft #30. MASON SHAW (PORT ADELAIDE, South Fremantle, 18, 197cm, 82kg)
Key forward who is strong overhead and a reliable goal kicker, from either set shots or with snaps. Has excellent endurance.
Draft #62. SAM SIGGINS (ADELAIDE, Lauderdale, Tasmania, 18, 194cm, 86kg)
Tall defender noted for the attacking drive he generates from the back line. Versatile for his size and has safe hands.
Draft #81. RORY ATKINS (ADELAIDE, Calder Cannons, 18, 183cm, 75kg)
Half-forward who leads well and is strong overhead for his size. Good decision-maker either by hand or on his preferred left foot.

Based on "leadership" Clury looks interesting. Shaw looks good too.

Additional information on Tom Clurey – (my choice)
Tom has had a great two years at TAC Cup level, which included all five games for Vic Country at the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships this year. He has played as a key defender for the most of the 2012 season, but has the ability to play forward also. Tom reads the game really well, is strong in aerial contests and has a good skill level. His testing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine highlighted Tom's outstanding athletic ability where his aerobic testing was a standout feature. Tom has played in all sectors of the talent pathway, including Under 15 Schoolboys, Bushrangers Under 16, TAC Cup and Vic Country at both Under 16 and Under 18 levels.

There's talk of Port & West being banned from this draft.

Also there are other players available to select

South may well get 2 picks

if that is the case we take the next best player available hopefully a defender

Going to be a pretty interesting draft this one.
Im not that keen on afl listed players in the sanfl; you never know up until game time whether you have them or not for a start. Some come to play in the sanfl with the right attitude...plenty of others dont.
It looks as though Port and West maybe suspended from this years mini draft because of salary cap violations, also its rumoured 1-2 clubs may "sell" their picks to the highest bidder..
From a South point of view... Id be working pretty hard to replace Ainger (and McKernan), and find a key defender, without having to use the minidraft to do it. Then if all else fails use the minidraft to fill in the gaps.

The list above contains plenty of Key position players...something that is in short supply at Noarlunga. However picking a couple that hopefully wont be called upon too often from their afl club, and possessing the right attitude is not so easy.

Can someone tell me how the AFL listed player payments impacts upon our salary cap? Indeed given the sensitivity of this issue - do AFL players get paid by anyone or do they play for love???

Panthers 64 they play for the love BUT a nominal fee of around $500 per League game is included in the salary cap.

As much as I love indigenous players, Liam is facing charges in March of 'Aggravated assault' and 'Intent to cause serious harm'. If convicted he would likely get a significant sentence - too much risk to gamble on. Besides this, our full-forward set-up with Wundke & Rolfe looks pretty good and not worth tampering with.

I think Rolfey is better as that floating forward running between centre and full forward rather than a key position player. Although he did play well in the Foxtel Cup at full forward. We definately need another tall forward option up there. Mason Shaw is ideal and doubt whether he would play with the Power in his first year.

Sturt have already said they want Angus Graham.

Why aren't West in the mini draft? I thought they could only recruit from within their zone plus the mini draft?

Why wouldn't we go Hartigan? We need key defenders and he is a bit older and stronger than the other kids drafted.

According to story on Adelaide now, Hartigan is coming to us. Not like we don't need big defender. Wouldn't mind Mitchell though. Premiership player at Claremont.

Yeah I would go Mitchell.

Saw him play in the state game and was really impressed.

I am sure they will be welcomed into Panther land as have others before them.

Lets hope they can adjust to the standards of SANFL football quickly.
