Round 8 v Sturt

Post by B&W63 on Fri May 13, 2016 11:05 pm

Interesting game - 3 big outs will test our depth which is as good as its been for a long time. Peter Steffe finally gets his chance and is probably a better ruckman but he won't match Bass in ground efforts, Newell is a speedster in good form, but Fields is hard to replace.

Also interesting to see 2 out of 3 Advertiser pundits picking Sturt.

However what our guys play now is a very disciplined structured game plan so I expect the replacements to be relatively seamless and the mighty Panthers will give a good account of themselves.

Looking forward to this one, generally enjoy watching footy at Unley (except those testing days when Chambers would out score our entire team..).

Sturt 14.10 def South 7.4

Perhaps a reality check for South. Looked flat from the opening minutes and struggled to keep up with the DB's mid-fielders. Smashed in every department.

Hard to find too many reasonably players. Redigolo named best by the club, probably fair enough, was very good one on one. Debutants Steffe (44 hitouts) and Newell both showed a bit.

Sturt far too good.

What do we read into today's performance?
Outplayed in all areas.
Guess we put it behind us, & all important how we respond next round against Port.

Down day and I would have taken 6-1 at the start of the season if offered.

Small field negated our style of play. But we just didn't look ready to play all day. Didn't have anyone stand up. Veide had a dog of a day

Steffe was brilliant in the ruck and often beat Osborne & Lienert. Big apprenticeship in the reserves so a well-deserving league debut. Newell was ok in his debut too.

De Visser copped a heavy knock late in what looked like a repeat of the Fields incident last week. Walked off very groggy and appeared concussed either, so might be another on the sideline.

Meanwhile our reserves had a comfortable win. Smashed Sturt in the first and last quarters and pissed around with the ball in the middle. Trembath booted six including some trademark long bombs. Still going to be hard for him to crack the league team with Eddy/Haren/Overall in.

Either way, both our senior sides are flying.

Overall to have a rest ... Trembath in next week IMO

From the first bounce yesterday we looked very flat and just not switched on at all. Sort of got a early vibe that day was not going to be out day.

Few stinkers from some players yesterday.

We were killed in the midfield by Riley and Kirkwood .... Big bodied players that were too strong physically for our small mids Liddle and Cross.

Still , only 1 loss but need to improve this week versus Port. We need to shut the critics up and come back fighting this week.

Keep positive Panther fans and get behind the guys this week at Alberton .... Just be very gentle on Chad Cornes.
